Acker’s highly anticipated September Hong Kong opener took place on Saturday, September 28 with a renewed sense of energy, resulting in an estimated HK$70 million (US$9 million) in sales. Buoyed by a surge in the stock market and sharp gains in the Shanghai and Hong Kong exchanges, the auction marked Acker’s strongest sale in Asia in recent years. With packed rooms in Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Shanghai, bidders fiercely battled over the world’s finest and rarest wines, led by iconic Burgundy and mature Bordeaux. The upcoming 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and the excitement of Golden Week further fueled the lively atmosphere. Acker looks to continue the momentum with two major auctions on the horizon: the October 16-17 US sale featuring The Last of a Great American Collection: The Exceptional Cellar of John Tilson, and The Singapore Anniversary Auction on October 26 live from Wakuda in Marina Bay Sands. The Singapore sale will feature Acker’s own Golden Week of Wine, a series of exclusive events culminating in an auction estimated at SGD$4M.

Renowned Burgundy dominated the Top Ten Lots in the sale, led by twelve bottles of 2010 Domaine de la Romanee Conti Romanee Conti in OWC selling for HK$1.9M (US$244,216). The second and third positions were also won by DRC with twelve bottles of 2009 Romanee Conti in banded OWC realizing HK$1.7M (US$218,509) and a Methuselah of 2000 Romanee Conti capturing HK$1M (US$128,535). Two lots from Henry Jayer tied for the fourth spot with four magnums of 1993 and six magnums of 1995 Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux both achieving HK$900,000 (US$115,681). The sixth position went to a twelve-bottle 2001 DRC Assortment in OWC for HK$550,000 (US$70,694), followed by six bottles of 1996 H. Jayer Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux from the personal collection of Martine Saunier and twelve bottles of 2000 DRC La Tache, each collecting HK$500,000 (US$64,267). Chateau Latour represented mature Bordeaux in the Top Ten Lots with twelve bottles of 1959 from the Ancient Nobel Latour Collection realizing HK$425,000 (US$54,627), soaring above estimates. The Latour lot was matched by a twelve-bottle mixed lot of 2009 DRC and twelve bottles of 2002 DRC La Tache in OWC, also achieving HK$425,000 (US$54,627) and rounding out the top ten.

"It was an exhilarating auction and a whirlwind of a week—so many new faces and a renewed sense of energy that had been sorely missed. Sharing delicious wines from Grafe-Lecocq with its fourth and fifth generations made it even more memorable." said Acker Chairman John Kapon. “The market is surging and the excitement for Golden Week and the PRC's 75th anniversary was really something to see, and I’m looking forward to my next trip back already. In the meantime, we’re excited to carry this energy forward with two big events coming up—our US sale on October 16 and 17, featuring the final chapter of John Tilson's legendary American collection, and our own Golden Week of Wine in Singapore from October 23-26, culminating with The Anniversary Auction with our partners at Marina Bay Sands and Grand Cru Wine Concierge. It’s only been one month, but it is shaping up as a superlative Fall season."

Acker's 2024 auction season continues with sales in the U.S. Wednesday and Thursday, October 16-17, The Singapore Anniversary Auction on Saturday, October 26, and a special auction of rare Chartreuse on Saturday, November 9. Consignments are now being accepted for November & December auctions, including the annual Birthday Auction which has an approaching property deadline of Friday October 11. Weekly web auction deadlines are every Friday. For more information, email info@ackerwines.com
